Lighting Workshop – Martial Arts Studio Shoot – Karate

On January 23rd, Rob and Barry organised a lighting workshop focused on martial arts. The session featured two exceptional models, Abbie and Shane, who are championship martial artists rather than professional models. Their participation was secured through a Facebook outreach by Rob, resulting in both athletes agreeing to join the event.

Shane, a 1st Dan Black Belt training with Byrne Belt Academy and an English Champion, expressed his enjoyment of the evening and anticipates the images created by our club members. Abbie is involved with Doryoku Ryu Karate, where she teaches traditional Okinawan Karate, including Kobudo (traditional weapons), Kumite (sparring), and Kata (performance).

With nearly 15 years of dedication to Karate, Abbie has progressed from a student to an instructor and has had the privilege of training in Okinawa, the birthplace of Karate. She also had a positive experience at the workshop and appreciated the opportunity to engage with the club.

Prior to the workshop, members received ample guidance and preparation materials, including flyers and camera setting links, to ensure an informative and enjoyable event. Participants brought various types of camera equipment, ranging from Nikon and Canon to Olympus (OM systems), Sony, and Pentax.

The workshop provided two setups, allowing members to capture impressive shots using traditional lighting techniques and experimenting with ‘rear curtain flash‘ to achieve dynamic movement effects.

Feedback from members was overwhelmingly positive, highlighting the fun and success of the evening and the quality of images shared with Abbie and Shane.

Special thanks to Rob and Barry for organising a memorable event.
