We recently had the pleasure of welcoming Mathew Browne to our camera club, where he gave a really engaging and enjoyable presentation on award-winning images. He shared a great mix of his own work along with examples of successful photographs, talking us through what makes an image stand out—whether it’s strong composition, creative use of light, or simply capturing a moment that tells a story.
One particularly interesting part was hearing how he carefully selects images for different competitions, thinking about the theme, judging styles, and what might resonate most with a panel. It gave us a real insight into the thought process behind submitting work, not just taking it. The talk was relaxed and easy to follow, with plenty of useful tips that we can all try out in our own photography.
There was something for everyone, no matter your level of experience, and it definitely got people thinking a bit differently about how they approach their shots. All in all, a really worthwhile evening that left us feeling inspired and keen to get out with our cameras.
