Olympus PEN F

Flavour of the month at the moment seems to be the Olympus PEN F and for a very good reason. The PEN F still seems to be in great demand costing as much as it was when new in 2016 when it was first introduced.

It seems ironic that the concept of this size sensor stems from the half frame camera from the film era days also called the PEN F, which took seventy two images on a thirty-six exposure film, hence the name half frame ie half the size of full frame.

Another fact is that Leica the original inventor of the full frame format introduced the Leica d lux 8 which just happens to be half frame, now referred to as four thirds 4/3 the same as the PEN F.

Nothing ever seems to be new in the latest and greatest cameras of today.

It seems quite remarkable that a ten year old digital camera could hold its value so well, but compared to the original full frame Leica camera 0, which sold for the sum of 14.4 million pounds in 2022 it doesn’t seem that big a deal.
