The Camera - A Few Lessons

Here are a few links to some simple camera lessons to set you on your way into the world of photography and understanding how to come off the ‘Auto’ setting.

What is Aperture?

Aperture is the opening of the lens through which light passes. When you hit the shutter release button to take the picture, the camera aperture opens to the predetermined width, letting a specific amount of light through.

What is Shutter Speed?

The final component of the exposure triangle is shutter speed. Shutter speed is how long the camera shutter is open, exposing the image to light, typically measured in milliseconds to minutes.

What is ISO?

Once light passes through the aperture of a camera lens, it lands on either a sensor (in digital photography) or light sensitive film stock (in film photography). ISO is what measures your camera’s digital sensor’s sensitivity to light or your film stock’s sensitivity to light.

White Balance & Colour Temp

White balance is a vital camera setting to properly calibrate in order to achieve your desired image. If you have ever taken a photograph or video and found the result to look unnatural blue or yellow, then improper white balance is to blame.

The reason why setting white balance is necessary comes down to the color of the light upon the subject, also called the color temperature. Whether dealing with natural light outdoors or man-made lighting fixtures indoors, light can come in a wide variety of intensities, values, and temperatures.

What is Focal Length?

It’s a measurement that specifies how your lens interacts with your camera. On a practical level, focal length determines field of view, or how much of a view will be captured.

It also indicates how large subjects and elements in that view will be, or the magnification.

What is Focus Stacking?

Focus stacking is a technique that allows photographers to create a single image where objects on various focal planes are all in focus.

Focus stacking, also called photo stacking or focus layering, can create the effect of a deeper depth of field without any loss of clarity or sharpness.

Macro Photography

If you’ve ever marvelled at the intricate details of a dewdrop on a leaf or the delicate patterns on an insect’s wings, then you’ve experienced the magic of macro photography.

This photography practice allows photographers to capture the mesmerizing beauty of small subjects in a larger-than-life format.
